What Does a New Heart Look Like?

Ezekiel 36:26

Meet pen pals—Deshauna and Frank. Strange pals under the all-too-common conditions of the day—distrust and distance. But when a human heart is under the auspices of a new spirit, people find common ground and forever friendships.

Dashana Priest was a third grader when she wrote a thank you letter to Frank Grasberger, a WW-II veteran. She had never met the 95-year-old but was compelled to write him when she was presented with an opportunity as part of a school project to write a vet. She wanted to thank him for his service.

"If it wasn't for you, we would never have freedom. I'm so happy you made sacrifices. Your friend, Dashauna Priest.”

When Frank received the letter, it grabbed his heart and would not let go. He took it everywhere he went. "I'd never be without it," he said. His wife said, "When he had that letter with him, he had a feeling of faith, and trust, and love." The senior living residential facility staff saw this. They would not rest until they sleuthed their way to bring these pen pals together, albeit age and cultures apart—but not hearts apart. This week Dashauna—a 21-year-old Army Guard Reserve herself—strolled up to Frank with flowers and a smile. Frank’s heart swelled.

“You're not the girl! Don't make me cry, please. Honest to God. Oh, I love you so much. I really do. You don't know how long… I pray every night with this thing. This is a Godsend."

When the Spirit of God is operating in human hearts of flesh and not stone, faith, trust and love forge forever-friends and new families. “She is like my new daughter,” Frank beamed.

This kind of uniting is available to all children of God who accept the Spirit of God. God promised this pouring of Spirit to his exiled children—valley of dry bone children—who had become stone-hearted, lifeless skeletons of themselves.

26 "Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 "And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances. Ezekiel 36:26-27

The broad smile and forever bonds of faith, trust and love of Dashauna and Frank are available today for those who want better, to treat each other kinder, who want a new heart unafraid of two powerful words:

Thank you.
