Psalms in the Key of Life Series
Jennifer Lopez found him three times. Liz Taylor found him eight times. Mickey Rooney found her eight times. Britney Spears found hers and lost hers in a record three hours. What did they find so often and loose so easy: The right one.
How many of you here have already found Mr./Ms. Right. Many people sing about it. Of all the categories of songs being sung, love songs are number one. And love songs are all about finding the right one. Just listen to the titles of some old school love songs:
The Chi-Lites ask: “Have you seen her, tell me have you seen her”
The Temptations answered: “My girl, my girl, talking about my girl”
Mary Wells replied: “Nothing you could say can tear me away from my guy”
The Temptations say: “It was just my imagination, running away with me”
Why? Debbie Boone says: “Cause you light up my life”
Everybody has their favorite love song because everybody is looking for their own right one. Let me make it easier for you this morning. The first question is not: Who is right for you, but who is right with God? When you have that in focus, the end will bring you what you’re supposed to have. Who is the one right in the eyes of God? The right one matters in affections, elections, but most importantly in spiritual direction.
To answer that, we’re going to go to the number 1 song on the soul charts—God’s charts—Psalm 1, the top of Book of Psalm which is God’s 150 songs that address the issues of life in our series Psalms in Key of life. It is not that Psalm1 is any more important than the other 149 psalms, but it comes first and it hits right to the heart of the issue first: Who is the right one with God?
First, we’ll see what you need to know about Mr./Mrs. Right; second, what you need to know about Mr./Mrs. Wrong; and lastly, what God knows about the ways of both. So, let’s just slow this party down with the number one slow jam in the universe: Finding the right one—right.
KEY VERSES:
1 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.4 Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. 6 For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.
Look for the right one to have the right focus when it comes to his associations; his affections and his agriculture.
The right one has the right associations: (v.1)
1 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,
1. The right one does not walk with the loose.
2. The right one does not stand with those who aren’t straight shooters. If they lie to others, they’ll lie to you.
The right one has the right affections: (v.2)
2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law--day, and night.
Mr. Right has the right agriculture: roots and fruit: (v.3)
3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.
The right person has evidence of their character: What have they done? What promises have they kept? How do they treat their father and mother? How they treat them reflects the relationship they have with God and how they will treat you.
Look for the wrong one to show their true self eventually, so be patient. (v. 4-5)
The wrong one will be worthless in the end: (v. 4)
4 Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.
Chaff is the skin of a grain or nut that has no nutritional value. It separates from the grain when shaken. Likewise, the wrong person displays their worth when adversity shakes their world. Do they run or do they persevere?
The wrong one will not stand in the end with those who are in right relationship with God: (v. 5)
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
Look at the company Mr./Mrs. Right associations with. Their friends are an indicator of their real character. My grandmother used to say, “If you sleep with pigs, you come out smelling of a pig pen.” God says it a little nicer: “association brings about assimilation. (Pro. 13:20)
God knows who Mr. Right and Mr. Wrong and their fate. (v. 6)
The reward of the right one with God is spiritual prosperity and blessings while the destiny of the wrong person is death of spiritual peace and victory.
6 For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction
The question you must ask yourself regarding who you should associate with is who is right with God: Will this person will have a seat at the table of God when we all sit together as family? It’s not who you wind up with, but which seat you end up with. Will this person hinder or help you achieve your God-purpose on earth and support your final destination in heaven?
At the Bema Seat of Christ, all believers will be judged according to I Corinthians 5:10:
I did not at all mean with the immoral people of this world, or with the covetous and swindlers, or with idolaters, for then you would have to go out of the world.
The other seating available at the end is at the Great White Throne according to Rev. 20:11:
11 Then I saw a Great White Throne and the one sitting on it. The earth and the heavens fled away from His presence, and there was no place found for them.
Choose wisely on this side of life who you will be associated with if you want a good seat on the other side.
Application: From this lesson, I will…: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
